The Green Venice, a territory labelled “Grand Site de France”

The Green Venice – a touristic term created in 1902 by Henri Clouzot – is just a part of the vast Marais poitevin Regional Natural Park. On one side, the Aiguillon Bay is an internationally important site for bird migration. On the other side, the dry marsh – created and managed by men over the centuries for agriculture and farming – represents the largest part of the Marais poitevin. Finally, the wet marsh is the most renowned part of the Marais poitevin, a true aquatic maze with, in its easternmost par, the touristic emblem called the Green Venice.

But what could have been just a patchwork of canals turned out to be a real asset for the Marais poitevin area. Now, more and more visitors enjoy walking across or navigating in the Green Venice and its surroundings. This territory has been labelled “Grand Site de France” since 2010!
